Almost 18 months on from when lockdowns swept the globe, Canada has finally reopened it’s borders to fully vaccinated international tourists.

Travellers are considered “fully vaccinated” if it has been at least 14 days since completing a full course of a Canadian approved vaccine. 

American residents have already been able to visit Canada since August 9. This, the first step in Canadas gradual re-opening. However, the change wasn’t reciprocated by our southern neighbours, with Canadians only allowed in to the U.S. via plane. 

Canada’s largest and busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International, is expecting a significant increase in waiting times in comparison to pre-Covid travel. There are a lot of factors at play here, with the most significant being the huge turnover in staff on top of the health screening process. 

This will obviously affect the traffic both in and out of airports, with some estimations that wait times will peak at around eight hours. 

Teething problems aside, it is a brilliant step forward as Canada reopens. A significant lifeline has also been handed to a number of Canadian businesses hamstrung by the lack of tourism throughout the pandemic. 

Travel is , however, still treacherous in these times, with restrictions changing like the wind. The true impact of the delta variant remains to be seen.
