World leaders at the G7 Summit in Cornwall, England have agreed to work together on a “mutual recognition” of vaccine passports in order to help reintroduce international travel and commerce.

Canada remains a clear outlier amongst the countries present; there have still been no concrete plans outlined to reopen the countries borders.

The Canadian Travel & Tourism Roundtable (The Roundtable) has today demanded that the federal government immediately release a comprehensive, national plan to reopen Canada.

The economy, free movement of Canadians nationally and the Canada-U.S border are all issues yet to be clearly addressed.

Speaking after the Summit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the leaders collectively recognised

“the importance to the global economy of safely restarting international travel, by land, air and sea” and stressed the need for “a set of common standards for travel including interoperability and mutual recognition of digital applications, testing requirements, recognition of vaccination status including exemptions and comparable criteria for when responsive measures may be required.”

Last week, it was announced, the end to mandatory hotel quarantines for fully vaccinated Canadians. This is a move in the right direction. However, there are still too many unanswered questions.

This issue was mirrored by Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce:

“It is imperative that we have logical, clear measures in place to facilitate travel within Canada and internationally. A piecemeal approach to policy announcements on travel will only raise more questions and create confusion.” He said.
