Vaccine passports are beginning to open up borders across the globe, as we edge ever closer to the return of international travel!

Long suffering Canadians that have abided by the ever changing restrictions are gasping to break free from their homes. White sandy beaches, ice cold cocktails and the sound of waves lapping against the shore seem all but a distant memory.

Good news shines on the horizon as a number of countries begin to outline their plans to revive their tourism industries:

The Tourism Authority of Thailand, for example, will reopen the beautiful Island of Phuket to tourists to those carrying vaccine passports from July 1.

Some other countries are also accepting foreign tourists with vaccine passports combined with a negative test. Barbados is amongst this group, requiring a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken, at most, three days before.

What will a vaccine passport look like?

As of right now, there isn’t a global standard. However, change may well be on the horizon. The G7 Summit, taking place in Cornwall, England, will have vaccine passports high on the agenda. Guests from India, Australia, South Korea and South Africa will also be joining to take part in discussions.

“Clearly we need to have agreement on things like vaccine passports.” Said Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister.

What problems will travellers face?

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the biggest problem facing travellers will be the increase in travel time. “Current data indicates that airport processing times have ballooned to [three] hours during peak time with travel volumes at only about [30 per cent] of pre-COVID-19 levels,” explained a press release.

So, there is an expectation that these wait times will balloon even further to deal with the demand of reopening our collective doors.
